Ephedra - Is It Really Dangerous?

By Tamara Dorris It’s so difficult to know what to take and what not to take. First, we hear that Ginkgo Biloba is good for our hearts and our brains, then they tell us is causes excessive bleeding, which can be life threatening in some situations—such as taking it prior to surgery. Next it was Kava Kava, an ancient root that has been relaxing islanders for years, and now the media says it causes liver damage. And what about Ephedra? While I have great respect for the medical community at large, I find it frustrating that many natural supplements are being labeled as dangerous when that just isn’t the case. Ephedra has suffered the same bad rap. The properties of the Ma Huang plant have been healing people for 5,000 years, yet in the last 10 or 20 years, authorities are calling it dangerous. And I can tell you why. Because anytime that something makes a person feel good, there will be people who abuse and over use it. Epedra fits into that category. Even though Ma Huang has been relieving our ancestors of various ailments—from asthma to lethargy-for centuries upon centuries, as soon as word got out in the West that one could lose weight and feel great (Ephedra speeds up metabolism and burns fat) a few people over indulged. Before too long, Ephedra was being touted as dangerous and it was temporarily banned in diet products. Having written two preventative health books and an on-going health column, I have had the opportunity to interview many authors, researchers, and physicians, both medical and naturopaths. The one thing I have learned in all of this is that nearly anything can be dangerous in excess. Many prescription drugs kills people every day. There are certain vitamins that would be toxic if you took too many. Not unlike drinking or recreational drugs, just about anything you consume, whether a natural or man-made supplement, has the potential to cause harm. In conclusion, I am convinced that Ephedra has gotten an unfair reputation as being a dangerous supplement when indeed, the danger only comes when people do not pay attention to the labels on the pills or do not consult their own health care practitioner when starting a new product. It only makes sense that a diet supplement that helps one lose weight is going to speed up the metabolism in order to burn fat, so, a person with heart disease would be remiss to partake without medical supervision. In my opinion and years of experience in a wide variety of medicinal herbs and supplements, I have found that the current Ephedra-based products on the market (when they abide by the current standard of 10 mg) are no more stimulating then two cups of coffee. As a society, it is our responsibility to pay attention to what we consume, act responsibly, and follow the recommended dosage. When we fail to do so, we wind up having products and supplements that are otherwise useful and beneficial, taken off the market for no one to enjoy. Increasing Perceived Value

By Daniel Wadleigh As you can probably tell, perceived value is what people are paying for. Perceived means what it brings to them mentally and emotionally as well as physically. Intrinsic value is mere physical replacement cost. For example, vitamins have an intrinsic replacement value of a few dollars, but they have a mental and emotional perceived value of comfort, hope, security and peace of mind because of enhanced life condition of well-being and longevity. This is to say that stressing the mental and/or emotional values of a product/service are critical to more sales. Or, if “adding value” to a commodity, the “extra cost”, if applicable, is more than justified by the extra perceived mental or emotional value, assuming that you relate all of the perceived value. Do you always buy the cheapest brand? Why not? I’ll tell you why you spend more - because the guy you bought from had a more professional looking store or truck, a longer warranty, better references, a longer track record, better service, more convenient location, better connections, knows your sister, is fun to do business with, has products from foreign countries, sold one to Robert Redford, lead the league in hitting at your high school, makes you feel significant when you come around, has earned your trust over time, has box seats at the Astrodome, knows how to fix it - fast, went to your University or trade school, sells a product that you heard Paul Harvey mention on the radio or saw in Reader’s Digest, claims a side benefit is better sleep or makes you appear better looking, is made in America, has environmentally safe products, makes you look like you’re in style, was once in the movie “True Grit”, has a cure for hangovers, was incorporated in the title of a book, was a piece of evidence in the O. J, Simpson trial, was used by American Indians to represent adulthood, reminds you of your first romance, is symbolic of a major accomplishment (like a graduation ring), Jack Nicholson has one, Michael Jordan eats them, demonstrates a level of economic affluence, makes life easier, feels good to the touch, pleases other people, impresses other people, draws people to you, might help you get a promotion, might put a little more romance into your relationship, can be stored easily, might be useful someday under certain conditions, might increase in value, makes a personal statement that you agree with, is something your Mother told you is good for you, claims to be safer, was bought at the “right store”, gives you peace of mind, reminds you to do something you need to remember, was bought at a discount, is generally accepted as a smart thing to have, was listed in the “What’s Hot” list, was part of David Letterman’s Top Ten List, is now offered by The Sharper Image, looks expensive, is the latest, is the fastest, brings back fond memories, is a way to have fun, is a way to be knowledgeable, has multiple functions, is something that you want that you can justify as well as afford, soothes the emotions, lightens the emotions, kills the emotions, saves time, eliminates boredom, initiates conversation, gets people to notice you, helps you get your way, comforts you when aggravated, lifts you up when down, helps the needy, is offered by organizations with your same level of integrity, is easy to learn, is harder to lose, gets you there on time, represents an opportunity to serve others, doesn’t compromise your conscience, does not require aggravation to accomplish, reduces fears, reduces doubts, reduces confusion, helps you to please someone you want to please, is something you know you should have done but put off, is pleasing to God, will save you money, will bring you money, will protect your money, will help control your future, makes you feel significant, makes you feel approved, makes you feel secure, or helps you identify yourself as a ______. These are the reasons why people want a product/service; it’s desire that moves it out! How to Turn a Marketing Calendar into Marketing Success!

By Jean Hanson Do you have a list of marketing ideas that you’d like to implement, but just never seem to get around to actually doing some of them? Who has the time? Creating a marketing calendar is the only way to make sure you stick to your plans. Take it seriously dont forward todays marketing to-do into tomorrows list or youll fall behind right away. Here are some tips to keep you on track: 1. Do you have a slow time of the year? This is the best time to brainstorm and create your marketing plan, and then put it into a marketing calendar. Start with your current list of marketing to-dos, and add to it. 2. Now that you have your list, make note of those things that you absolutely want to do, or have to do. This might be things like having a logo designed, and then creating your website. Or, maybe you have a new product or service that you need to create a press release for. 3. Decide how many of your marketing tasks you can accomplish each week. One task each week? Two? Three? Be realistic you dont want to say youre going to accomplish three things a week, find out you cant do it, and then give up on the whole list! 4. Do some of the items in your list need to be done at a particular time of year? Make note of these items and schedule them into your calendar first. 5. Do some of the items need to be done on a regular basis? Perhaps you send out a monthly ezine, or a quarterly mailing. Be sure to schedule these recurring items into your calendar. 6. Now its time to prioritize the rest of your list. Note which items are most urgent, and schedule them into your calendar. Move down your list until all items are scheduled. Voila - your marketing calendar is done! Now make sure that you incorporate it into whatever calendar system you use for everyday. By having a marketing calendar, you avoid the common situation most entrepreneurs find themselves in waiting to market their business when business is slow. Who knows, maybe youll find that the slow times arent so slow anymore! Jean Hanson is a Certified Professional Virtual Assistant. Garage Sale Advertising - How to Get TONS of Customers for Nearly Free

By Helen Walters One of the biggest mistakes people make when holding a garage sale is not advertising enough. Most people think that it is enough to put a single ad in the local paper one week before the sale. Usually these people are too worried that they will lose money on their sale because the ad costs too much. That is nonsense. When you don’t advertise much, you don’t get many customers. When you don’t get many customers, you have to sell at their price, because if you don’t, there is no other customer looking to buy that item. However, if you have a lot of customers looking at the same items, you can set the price and not need to haggle because you know that there is already another person wanting to pay for it. The more you advertise, the more customers you get, and the more you are in charge. Most people don’t bother to use flyers very much anymore. Perhaps they think they are too busy to put them out, or that they won’t work. However flyers are not that difficult to use effectively. When done right they can bring tons of people into your sales. You just need to keep in mind that while places with bulletin boards set up for flyers and such get a lot of traffic they also get a lot of ‘flyer competition’. This means that your garage sale flyer MUST STAND OUT and CATCH PEOPLES ATTENTION or it will simply be lost in a sea of paper! So, use bright paper, and a LARGE BOLD HEADLINE that gets attention by being different. Then let the rest of the flyer give the details of your sale. Let me say that a little differently: you need to use a headline that causes people to stop and read your flyer. This does not mean you need to be wildly promotional or crazy with your headlines. But if there are 19 flyers on the board that say “Garage Sale on Saturday”, and your’s is the same, it just won’t be read. However if your flyer says something different it will attract more attention. So try something like the following instead: - Weve Got What You Need for your garden at 90% off new prices - Huge Discounts On all Home Products this Saturday Then all you need to do is print them up and put them in your car and ask if you can post one at every store you visit during your weeks chores. No extra work is involved at all. Take these ideas and run with them and your next garage sale will be on its way to a resounding success. Get original garage sale tips and other excellent resources on how to organize a garage sale with the least amount of work and hassle. Great selection of tips and advice will guide you to a very profitable and enjoyable garage sale experience. Job Interviews: Succeeding With Panel Interviews

By Bonnie Lowe These days, job interviews often consist of a panel of three-to-six interviewers. A “team approach” to finding the best candidate can be beneficial for the employer. Each member brings a different set of skills, experience and judgment to the team, and can point out pros (and cons) about a candidate that the other interviewers might miss. Panel interviews can also be beneficial for the job seekers. In a one-on-one interview you only have one shot at making the best impression. With a team doing the interviewing, your odds are increased. Say for example that Interviewer No. 1 had a bad experience with your past employer and unconsciously (or consciously) holds that against you, even though you had nothing to do with what happened. Interviewers No. 2, 3, and 4 have no such prejudices and so could sway the vote in your favor. While panel interviews often seem more intimidating than one-on-one interviews, here are some steps you can take to ease your stress and ensure a better outcome. 1. Relax. Remember that being faced by a panel of strangers (versus one) is better for you. 2. Smile. Everyone in the room will smile back and you’ll all get off to a great start. 3. Greet each interviewer individually. Shake hands with each person. Repeat their names as you are introduced (everyone likes to hear their own name, and it will help you to remember them). 4. Include everyone when answering questions. Face and make eye contact with the person who asks the question, but then extend your eye contact to everyone in the room. You’re speaking to all of them, not just the person who asked the question. 5. Get their cards. Before leaving, get a business card from each person in the room. These will come in handy when it’s time to send your thank-you notes. (If they don’t have cards, ask for their names again if you don’t remember them; jot them down. You can contact the HR person or receptionist later to get their email or mailing address.) 6. Send individual thank-you notes. Immediately send a thank-you not to each member of the interview panel, but don’t make the notes identical. Make it more personal by pointing out something that person said or asked. For example, “When you asked me about my marketing experience, I forgot to mention that in addition to my three years as a marketing representative at ABC company, I also participated on several marketing focus groups while working at XYZ company.” Remember, a panel interview is an opportunity to shine in front of not just one person, but a whole team! 10 Steps on Improving Your Metabolism

By Karen Sessions Feeling sluggish and low on energy? Do you feel like you work and work toward your weight loss goal and never seem to make any dramatic improvement? You could be suffering from a slow metabolism. This does not have to destroy your weight loss efforts. You can dramatically improve your metabolism and boost energy without taking supplements. Your metabolism simply refers to the conversion of food to usable energy by the body. It is the biological process by which energy is extracted from food or how fast or slowly the body burns calories. A few steps you can take to improve your metabolism naturally are: 1. Drink Cold Water Water is great to drink and you should be drinking a minimum of 8 to 10, glasses daily, of course, more is better. It will help increase your metabolism and remove toxins and fat. Drinking ice cold water before meals will shrink your stomach so you feel full quicker, and the cold water also helps to increase the metabolism. 2. Eat Every Three Hours Eat a small balanced meal every three hours, including snacks. Meals and snacks should be balance, meaning they should contain a complete protein, carbohydrates, as well as natural fat. Failure to eat consistently can lead to a slower metabolism and fat storage. Skipping meals slows down your metabolism. To ignite weight loss you need to be consuming the right foods throughout the day in a balanced manner. 3. Don’t Skip Breakfast Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as it gets your metabolism running in high gear. You wouldn’t drive to work on an empty tank and you shouldn’t start your day without adequate nourishment. Your first meal sets your metabolism for the day and keeps it going as long as you eat every three hours. If you get up early and eat a late breakfast, you missed out on several hours of burning calories. 4. Don’t Fear Fat Fat has a bad rep. Many think fat makes you fat. This is false. The type of fat and how much fat you eat impact your body fat composition. Fat is needed by the body. Those who follow a very low-fat diet have a harder time ridding their body of fat. Choose natural healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, various nuts, flax, and natural peanut butter. 5. Omit Trans Fat Trans fat is the bad fat, the cause of weight gain, low energy, depression, cancer, and heart disease. You will never get the body you desire by eating “healthy” fast food, frozen dinners, etc. If it’s man-made, it’s not the best choice. Go with the foods Mother Nature provided to meet your fat loss goals. 6. Be Active Daily Stay active at least six days a week. You can easily cycle cardio and weight training so it’s balanced and not overbearing. In addition to that, take the stairs when possible or park further out to get that little bit of extra movement and keep the heart and lungs working optimally. Studies show little movements such as tapping your toes while working also helps to burn calories. 7. Do Cardiovascular Exercise Cardio is heart and lung healthy. It also burns calories. Doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty can tap into fat stores and keeps the body burning calories at a high rate for about an hour after cardio is finished. If you fail to eat adequately daily, this can work against you. Doing morning cardio on very low calorie die can burn muscle. Another good time to incorporate cardio is in the evening, after your last meal. This allows you to burn calories so you are not sleeping on them. You do not have to implement a morning and evening session, choose one or the other or cycle between the two to prevent staleness and boredom. 8. HIIT It Blend some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) into your cardiovascular program from time to time to give your body and metabolism a good shock. The body is programmed to adapt. Therefore, the same cardio day in and day out can become stale real fast. Take one or two days a week and implement some HIIT to give the body an added shock. 9. Weight Train Resistance training builds muscle, which is metabolically active tissue. The more muscle you acquire, the faster your metabolism. Muscle will put curves in the right places and allow you to eat more calories a day. 10. Listen to Your Body Killing yourself with workouts is just as dangerous as not working out at all. Listen to your body and get proper rest. Don’t train if you are ill or just simply too tired. Training in such a state can cause more problems than it solves. If any of the above fail to prove results in 4 to 6 weeks, there could be an underlying problem, such as a food allergy, acidic pH, sluggish thyroid, hormonal imbalance, etc. If so, I recommend searching a natural healer in your area to determine the cause and work from there. For the most part, proper diet and herbs can correct any ailments. Karen Sessions has been in the fitness industry since 1988. She embarked on weight training to overcome an eating disorder, Anorexia Nervosa in its early stages. She overcame the eating disorder, received her personal training certificate, competed in many local bodybuilding contests, and qualified for Nationals. Since then shes went on to write six e-books (weight loss, female bodybuilding, contest preparation, leg training, figure/fitness secrets, and cellulite removal). She writes articles for several fitness websites, as well as her own, www.theelitephysique.com, and also distributes a monthly e-newsletter. She has a very active and lively forum, filled with positive and supportive people with informative content. Karens sole goal is to educate others and help them apply that knowledge. Make Your Event Memorable - Plan Carefully With Promotional Products

By Rick Sheldon For any special event, promotional products make such an experience even more meaningful. Take your carefully planned occasion and enhance it. You can accomplish this by creating enthusiasm, incorporating a creative theme, instilling motivation, and manifesting positive impressions. Promotional products help make your happening distinguished. Regardless of how much time and effort you have spent in planning, it is important to remember the importance of promotional products and their integration into your special day. Dont miss the opportunity to engender long-lasting positive memories of your organization or event. Be sure that it is happily remembered for months or even years afterward by including promotional products. Create Anticipation Send out promotional products in advance as reminders of that upcoming special event. Generating interest beforehand is key. Incorporate your unique theme into the promotional product concept and establish that feeling of excitement. Motivational Reminders Perhaps your event relates to employees achieving outstanding sales or other work-related goals. Keeping your participants focused and enthusiastic requires even more advance notice. Also important here is involving a larger quantity of promotional products to serve as reminders. Such special events involve well-thought out planning and the selection of an inclusive motif that can be easily conveyed through the duration of the event. Promotional products should serve as motivational reminders throughout the experience from beginning to end and relate back to that special theme in a creative way. Benefits If you are planning a benefit or a community affair, be sure to delegate responsibility by establishing a core team. Choose members to help keep maintain the planning process. Be sure that they are dedicated to the cause and enthusiastic about achieving the goals of the event. This will help establish a willingness to work together and assume certain responsibilities. It is also a good idea to involve community organizations to help contribute. Consider the local government and municipal divisions for donations of time and money. If you are a vendor participating in such a large event, you will want to give promotional products to visitors of your booth. This is important because even after the benefit, participants will have memorabilia reminding them of the cause and your association with it. Some examples of promotional products given out might include magnets, water bottles, pens, business card holders, letter openers, and other items. Such products can be inexpensive and also useful. Be sure that you have a proportional quantity of promotional products that relates to the total number of expected visitors. You will want to have enough products to circulate and promote your organization. Note that it can also be effective to use low-cost kids’ products as favors or prizes. These might include crayons, whistles, balls, puzzles, or other items. These are very inexpensive to purchase as a buyer, but children almost always consider them valuable. The Importance of Planning For special events, planning ahead can ensure success. You and your promotional consultant will want to consider several key ideas in advance: Goals - What is the purpose for the event? To promote goodwill? To generate new customers? To reward employees? Budget What is the figure per person? What is included in the budget: Food? Transportation? Gifts? Setting such guidelines in advance can help you plan more carefully and achieve all of your goals. Timeframe When do you want to begin the promotion of your special event? Is it a contest? The more involved an affair is, the earlier you will have to announce it. If traveling is required of attendees, their saving the date will be much more crucial than if the event were held in-house or at a local venue. Attendees Who are you inviting? Are these important clients? Employees to be recognized? Are attendees encouraged to bring guests or families? What are the demographics of the group? Theme How do you want to pull the event together? How will this special day be remembered? Choose a theme that will best celebrate the mood that you want to create. Products - What would you like to give your guests? How soon is it necessary to begin the promotion? Generate awareness of your event by sending invitations and promotional products that are impressionable. Consider trophies, prizes, gifts, and favors. In conclusion, regardless of the size or purpose of your event, promotional products help your guests celebrate and remember it. Work with a promotional consultant to create the desired message and goodwill of your invitees.
