Just How Good Are Weight Loss Diets Anyway?

By Mitch Hampson How many pounds are you wishing to lose for the summer? What is it about summer anyhow? Is it the sun or the sandy beaches that compel individuals to want to dash out and purchase a scanty bathing suit? I mean, it’s like they imagine they don’t have to be in shape throughout the winter. Whereas I appreciate that we all wear additional concealing clothes throughout the chilly months, I don’t see why it’s not a factor to stay in shape. We must all work to stay fit all through the year. With highly developed weight loss diets and fantastic fitness regimes we can make this a reality. Stop running a round like a lunatic toward the end of every spring to drop those added pounds. It’s time to come to your senses and keep them off forever with sensible weight loss diets that actually do work. What are your existing eating habits like? I can recollect back when I was a youngster and my parents would check out a assortment of weight loss diets. I keep in mind one in particular that my dad was doing. I sat down at the table with my sister for some lunch and there it was. Whilst we scarfed through our chicken and cheese sandwiches, our dad had a platter of saltine crackers and tuna in front of him. It looked somewhat peculiar to me and my sister. Despite the consequences, he ate it up like he was famished. And he most likely was! Okay, that’s sufficient jokes at my dad’s expense. The reality is that when it comes to weight loss diets, the majority of individuals will attempt nigh on everything to get those pounds off. From eating masses of meat and no bread, to existing on fruits and vegetables, there are without doubt a selection of diet plans to pick and choose from. Now, the key at this point is finding a nourishing diet that’s precise for your requirement. This could entail consulting a specialist. Have you ever spoken with a nutritionist on the subject of weight loss diets? They know what the score is. In truth, a competent nutritionist can help you plan out a reliable weekly eating schedule. Are you in need of some direction relating to weight loss diets? Perhaps it’s time you did some meaningful research. With the World-Wide-Web at your fingertips, the path ahead is somewhat straightforward. Get online and get instructions and weight loss diets that actually work. Sort through genuine testimonials by others who’ve tried specific diets and swear by them. Stop fretting about those few added pounds and get rid of of them with weight loss diets that work. It’s Almost Midnight! Do You Know Where Your Profitable Customers Are?

By Jim Deyo Do you have any idea how much your customers are actually worth to you? Do you know which ones you make money on and the financial impact of those that beat you up over price, service levels and “extras?” Or, do you say things like “we don’t have the time to figure that out,” - or, “we are different,” - or, “how would knowing that really help us” - etc, etc? What could be more relevant to any small business than having at least a basic understanding of customer profitability? Usually when a company looks honestly at its customers, the realization jumps off the page that you make a lot of money from some customers, you make less on another group, and you probably lose money on some. When you think in terms of the factors that drive this in your company, you can begin to take steps to make sure you retain the profitable ones and not spend too much of your time on the others. There are several ways to look at customer profitability, but one of the best is to think in terms of the lifetime value of an individual customer. Lifetime customer value (LCV) is the amount of profit that you will realize from an individual customer over the time that that customer does business with you. Focusing on LCV gets you two things. First, it measures the profitability of your customers, not just the revenue, and, because there can be a big difference in margin and costs between customers, the amount of money you make can be very different. Second, LCV focuses on your overall, long-term relationship with customers, not recent transactions, and over time some relationships have the potential to be a lot more valuable than others. The challenge, of course, is that when you start thinking about how to implement this concept, you quickly realize that it can be expensive and time consuming to collect the information you need to really impact your bottom line. But, what if you could get “80%” of the benefit of knowing the LCV of your customers for “20%” of the investment? Wouldn’t you be willing to spend a few hours and maybe do a little tracking and forecasting, if it would make you more profitable? Here are some things you can do. Start by creating a list of characteristics that describe both your ideal customers and your less than ideal customers. The objective is to identify both the quantifiable and the intangible factors that influence the profitability of an individual customer. For example, a long time customer, or a customer that makes multiple purchases, is better than a new one, for the obvious reason that it gives you a bigger revenue stream and the not so obvious reason that it doesn’t cost you as much to market, sell to, and service that customer. A customer that has been in business for awhile, or buys higher margin products, or refers other business to you, or who you can use as a reference is a lot more valuable to you than one who is always pushing you on price, or takes up a lot of your time, or who requires that you stock inventory that you otherwise wouldn’t, or who is just generally difficult to deal with. The more that you can quantify in describing these customers the better; but the intangibles are important, too, because there are hidden costs involved. Then divide customers into 3, or 4 revenue groups. You can refine this later, if you want to, but you need a starting point. One place to begin is some combination of number of purchases, average sale amount, or total sales per customer. Looking at number and dollars of sales splits your customer base either by revenue (dollars), or activity (number). These are two of the important things that drive profitability. Sometimes a better place to start, if you have the information, would be 3, or 4 divisions based on gross profit margin, or some other key profit driver. If you don’t know gross profit margin by customer, you could divide your customer base by number, or dollars of sales, look at the margin for a few representative customers in each group, and make some assumptions about the margin for the entire group. The value of an initial division by gross profit margin is that you have already made a big profitability distinction in grouping your customers. Finally, look at your expenses a little differently and break them into 4 categories. These 4 expense categories are cost of goods sold (the cost of making or buying the product you sell), sales and marketing (the cost to get and keep your customers), fulfillment (the cost to deliver your product to customers), and general and admin (everything else). A few assumptions have to be made here and in some cases you might have to split an expense between more than one of the four categories. But, once you’ve done this, you can look at your expenses in a different way - i.e. how they are affected by individual customer transactions. In restating expenses and matching them to the revenue groups, keep in mind several things that can meaningfully impact the profitability of any customer group and ultimately the total profit of your business. The number of customers in each group is important, because some of your expenses will be related to this. For example, shipping and handling is partly driven by the number of customers that you ship to. The number of new, versus repeat buyers is key, because you really don’t need to spread as much sales and marketing expense to the “old” customers as you are to the “new” ones. There may be costs related to a particular group for sales and marketing, or fulfillment. Fixed, versus variable costs are important, because you benefit from spreading fixed costs over as many customers as possible, while variable costs can rise or fall based on the number of customers that you service. And, finally, don’t neglect to consider time you and you staff have to spend servicing customers. Salary expenses are fixed in total (at least in the short term), but the amount of time that a customer demands can vary greatly and in that sense can be “hidden” costs as you look at the profitability of any customer. If you are so inclined, you can bring these assumptions together in a financial model that lets you forecast LCV with some precision. But, consider what you have learned already by taking these few steps. You’re recognizing in a more focused, analytical way, that not all customers are the same. You see more clearly that the amount of sales to a customer is not all that matters. The margin is a lot higher for some customers that for others. Your company’s expenses take on a different meaning, because they now generally reflect what it costs you to get, keep, and service your customers. You’re thinking in terms of some of the key factors that impact the profitability of any of your customers. If you stop here, you have spent a few hours of your time, but you still have benefited from understanding more about how much you might make, or lose, from different groups of customers. (There are two Business Management Tools on the Business Advisor Online site that will help you easily gain a financial perspective on the Lifetime Customer Value of your customers. The Simple Calculation LCV Model provides a high level calculation; it does not require you to have collected detailed customer information, but will still give you a reasonable LCV estimate. The Detailed Calculation LCV Model lets you include more information in the calculation and helps to estimate expenses in the four categories outlined in this weeks feature article.) How to Perform the Make One - Yarn Over and Bar Increases in Knitting

By Megan Kutchman There are five common ways to perform the “make one” increasing technique you’ll see in some knitting patterns. To make one is to increase your knitting by one stitch. Depending on the pattern, you may be instructed to make one several times in a row. Here are the five ways to increase in knitting: Knitting into the front and back of one stitch This will make an increase almost invisible. To do this, begin knitting a stitch like normal, but don’t pull the stitch off the left needle. Instead, point your right needle down and toward the back side of the left needle. Insert your right needle (while it’s pointing down) into the stitch on the left needle and knit as normal. Knitting into the stitch below This is another nearly invisible increase. Knit the stitch below the top stitch on your left needle. This is a more awkward method of increasing and tends to make the stitches tighter if you’re not careful while you knit the increase. Yarn Over This is the more widely known method of increasing. A yarn over increase will result in a gap in the knitting that looks like a hole. This is useful for making designs in a pattern and is often use in conjunction with a knit two together decrease to make an eyelet pattern. To perform the yarn over increase, wrap the yarn around the needle as you would when knitting a stitch. For example, you can knit a stitch, yarn over, then knit another stitch. The yarn over has to be done between stitches. Bar Increase This increase results in either a hole or a right-slanted stitch, depending on how it’s done. Hold your knitting project like normal, with a needle in each hand, and you should notice what’s called a “bar” between the needles. It’s the top strand on the stitch between the needles. To do a bar increase, insert your right needle through the front of this bar and lift it up onto your left needle. Now you can either: -knit into the back of this stitch which will result in a small hole -or knit into the front of the stitch for a right-slanted stitch Knitted On Cast On Increase If you’re familiar with the knitted on cast on technique, you can increase this way as well. To increase this way, begin as if to knit a stitch but instead of taking the stitch off the left needle, move the newly knitted stitch from your right to your left needle. This will result in a slanted stitch. Megan Kutchman owns a retail knitting site, http://www.faknitic.com. To learn more about knitting, visit the Knitting Articles resource page on her website. How to Make Your Apartment Safe

By Kyle Haley There are special dangers involved with apartment living. This is because you live so close to many other people. Their actions can jeopardize your safety and so its very important for you to be aware of what you must do to safeguard yourself, your family and your possessions. Fire Safety . . . Fire is perhaps the greatest danger in apartment buildings. With so many units joined together, it doesnt take long for fire to spread from one to another. The following guidelines are critical to your safety: Install smoke detectors in the kitchen, all bedrooms, the laundry area and hallways. You must test them every month and replace the batteries every 6 months. They wont do you any good if they arent in working order. Keep fire extinguishers handy in the kitchen, laundry area and near your outside grill. Develop an escape plan. This plan should include two ways of exiting in most cases, this will probably include the main door and either a window or door wall. If you live on a higher floor and dont have access to a fire escape, purchase a rope ladder to use for exiting from windows or a balcony. Practice your escape plan regularly so each member of your family knows exactly what to do in case of fire. Never use an elevator during a fire. Never park in front of fire hydrants or in fire lanes and make sure your guests dont either. General Safety . . . Fire isnt the only danger in an apartment building. You must also be aware of hazards that can exist no matter where you live and take precautions to prevent them. Install a carbon monoxide detector. Install screen guards or window stops and doorstops on your patio door to protect your children from falling. Keep your apartment and building number near the telephone so your family or babysitter can access it in case of an emergency. Remember that memories can fail during emergencies. Make certain your apartment number is clearly marked on your door. Be sure that each person in your family knows how to dial 911. Protecting from Intruders . . . There are many people coming and going in an apartment complex. Criminals count on this anonymity. That makes it very important to get to know the other tenants. When you do, not only are you better able to identify someone who doesnt belong, it also makes it more likely that tenants will look out for one another. Consider forming an apartment watch. This is similar to a neighborhood watch but confined to your apartment complex. If a group of tenants is on the alert for suspicious behavior, they can prevent many problems from arising. Install quality deadbolt locks on your door and place a wooden rod or steel brace on sliding doors. One caution about deadbolt locks dont purchase those that require a key. In an emergency, you wont have time to search for the key. Make sure your landlord has installed good lighting in all stairways, hallways, and common areas like the laundry room. Make sure that if your building has a common entry, the entry door locks so that only tenants can enter. Never open that door for strangers. If you follow these guidelines, practice good common sense, and are alert to whats going on around you, your apartment will provide a safe home for you and your family. By Kristy Annely Ultra bright flashlights are a must have for all campers, hikers, fishermen, electricians and inspectors. Having one of these handy in the glove compartment of your car is a good idea. During a sudden power cut, nothing can make you feel safer than an ultra bright flashlight. These flashlights can give up to three watts of power. They are very powerful, but that is not to say that they are heavy and cumbersome to carry. Most of them come in compact designs and are usually sleek and attractively designed. You can easily find mini ultra bright flashlights and waterproof ultra bright flashlights too. These are convenient to carry as well as affordable. Whether it is that long planned for boating trip or a trip to the garage to find the old music box, ultra bright flashlights will guide you through it all. These flashlights generally use LED technology. The intensity of the light given out by them is quite high. It usually exceeds sixty five lumens, which is almost as good as a normal bulb. Most of these flashlights are not only waterproof but also shockproof. This makes using these flashlights extremely convenient and safe. You will find flashlights in the market which can give you a power back up for up to six hours, because of which these flashlights are considered ideal if you are stuck in a no-power situation for long. The high quality ultra bright flashlights can even have up to hundred thousand hours of bulb life. These ultra bright flashlights are not just powerful in terms of the light that they give out but also in terms of their durability. However, you must exercise caution while using these flashlights. They must not be handled like toys. You must never shine them directly into the eyes as they can permanently damage the retina which means that one can even lose their eyesight because of sheer carelessness. Types Of Depression

By Milos Pesic Depression does not mean a moments sadness or feeling low. Depression is characterized by prolonged periods of sadness and melancholy. The loss of self-esteem, unhappiness, and emptiness within are indeed depression. Medical experts classify depression into various types depending on the severity of the problem. Bipolar disorder or manic depression is characterized by sudden mood changes. The same person can be at an elevated state at one moment and very low the next moment. Postpartum depression is often characterized by prolonged sadness, especially by a new mother when she undergoes all the physical stress during childbirth. Dysthimia is often less severe but is similar to depression and must be treated immediately. Cyclothemia is very much similar to bipolar disorder. A depressed person occasionally suffers from severe changes in mood along with his or her mental illness. In addition to this, people may experience sudden mood changes as the seasons change. More and more people fall into a groove during the winter and fall season. One of the severe forms of depression that medical sciences can identify is clinical or major depression. Clinical depression is not an illness. It is more of a disorder, since it is characterized by certain symptoms which are related to depression. The best thing with clinical disorder is that it can be tested effectively once diagnosed. Treatments for clinical depression have always been successful, and studies have revealed that 80% of the patients suffering from clinical depression have been cured effectively. Whatever may be the level of your depression, it is always better to leave it in the hands of a medical expert who can take good care for the problem. Clinical depression is not momentary sadness. There is a prolonged feeling of sadness and lack of interest in any sort of activities when a person is clinically depressed. Moreover, there is a loss of appetite and significant loss in weight also. Whats more, a feeling of hopelessness, low self-esteem, and withdrawal from social and family life are some of the symptoms of clinical depression. There is a sort of isolation which is always occupied with negative thoughts of ending life rather than making it a better one. The best thing about clinical depression is that a cure is possible. A proper combination of counseling and medication helps a clinically depressed person return to his or her normal life. There is a vast array of information available on the Internet and books on clinical depression. You can have some basic knowledge about treatments on clinical depression or visit your local clinic to ask for all possible treatments on clinical depression. Bottled Water Direct From the Tap

By Linda Symonds Almost everywhere you go today, you see people carrying a bottle of water. Over the last decade the bottled water industry has enjoyed explosive growth and many of us, it seems, have fallen in love with the taste, purity and convenience of bottled water. There is no disputing the popularity of bottled water; but is it really better than good old tap water? Bottled water is simply water from some source that has been placed in bottles for sale. The source of the water could be the natural spring pictured on the label, or it could be filtered municipal tap water. The bottled water industry would like us to believe that bottled water is more pure than our own tap water, but a good quality water filter installed in the home will provide water of equal and even better quality than bottled water. A study by Ohio State University found that 39 out of 57 bottled water samples did indeed have “purer” water than unfiltered tap water. However, 15 samples had significantly high bacteria. For water quality, that is at best, no better than what you would get from your tap with a water filter, bottled water is expensive; often costing more per gallon than gasoline. Purchasing one $0.69 cent bottle of water per day would add up to $248 per year. Filtering your own water at home would cost a cent of two per day or about $8 per year - saving $240. In these busy times, the convenience of bottled water has become a major selling point. It’s so easy to simply reach into the refrigerator and pull out a bottle of crystal clear water. It has zero calories, zero fat, and we can sip it no matter where we may be for the day - in meetings, at the supermarket or in the classroom. When we’re finished with the plastic bottle, we just drop it into the trash or the recycle bin. But what if, instead of throwing that plastic bottle away, we took it home and refilled it from our own tap. We’d have a renewable supply of bottled water for just a few cents per bottle and we’d be diverting that plastic bottle from the waste stream. It’s so easy to do and takes only a few extra minutes. The cost savings, along with knowing that you really are drinking good quality bottled water are worth the effort. To start bottling you own water, you’ll want to be sure you have installed a good quality water filter. A good quality, reasonably priced water filter, costing about $30, can be installed in just a few minutes directly onto your tap and provide pure, clean drinking water. Washing the bottles is important. Bacteria can build up in the moist are around the cap of the bottle so you’ll need to wash the bottles before reusing them. Either pop them into the dishwasher or wash them in the sink with soapy water. Rinse and dry the bottles as much as possible, particularly around the rim. Refill the bottles and store them in the refrigerator. They’ll be cold, clean and ready when you want them. If, after a few uses, you find that the bottles begin to look tattered, invest in a few good quality reusable sport bottles. They are attractive, durable and easy to clean. Relationships: Coming From A Place of Love

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. In recent articles on relationships, their challenges and their triumphs I have discussed how one’s one personal history of trauma: 1. Reduces one’s self esteem, self worth, self confidence. 2. Impairs one’s ability to be open, honest and relaxed with their partner. 3. Leads to a relationship based on neediness and codependence. 4. Blocks real intimacy from developing naturally. 5. Creates misperceptions of the other’s behavior that then leads to unnecessary conflict which undermines the relationship further. One thing that I havent mentioned, and which is the point of this article is that trauma “shuts down the heart” of an individual. What do I mean by this? Well I mean that it: 1. Impairs one’s ability to trust others. 2. Blocks your ability to feel peace, calm, joyful and relaxed. 3. It impairs one’s ability to feel and express Love genuinely. Although all of the above are necessary for a strong relationship the last, I’m sure will ring a loud bell of warning. I’m sure you’ll recognize, when ever you feel love for something, that it is felt most strongly over your heart. That is because that is where it originates from. When an individual experiences and/or carries trauma the heart begins to feel a deep sadness. In many cases the sadness may feel overwhelming if felt continuously. So what happens is that the sadness gets walled off behind a wall of fear which I call the “fear of feeling one’s feelings”. This may sound familiar to some of you I’m sure. Well this wall also blocks you from feeling all of the other feelings that originate in the heart, including feelings of Love. So it cuts you off from an experience that is supposed to guide you towards your partner and help you solidify your relationship. Without it where are you? Well you are lost, confused, numb, needy, and likely running into individuals who are not right for you.
